I read your email after you got many responses. I do remember Mathews using
the Sartre paper to make the point of when you are standing on the neck of
the oppressed you are not free either. It had enough impact on me to repeat
many times over.

Thank you one and all for the help. Marshal, thanks for the "I am not free
until all men are free" quote. I remember using it in the '60's but had
forgotten about it.

One possible source I found Googling for your quote is the Russian anarchist
Miklail Bakunin: "I am not free until all men are free."

The other is Sartre (same text).

Niebuhr was a possible avenue to the Niemoller quote, assuming he indeed
used it in his writings.

Had you Googled the other quote, Matthew 25 would have been at the top of
the list. Not too hard to find by yourself.

Googling away,

Marshall

Thanks for the help.

Tracy's help is greatly appreciated. She pointed me to Matthew 25 which is
a lot easier to deal with than all the possibilities on google or the New
Testament. Now Reinhold Niebuhr is a different question, at my age in life,
I don't really have the time to read all the possibilities on the Internet
nor all of Niebuhr's writings. So I'm still looking looking for some help.
The reference has to do with "if any are oppressed, I am oppressed."

For me, the purpose of the exercise is to locate "some of the sign posts
along my journey" as a reflective exercise, as a reminder of what shapes the
central core of my being.
