Obama's speaking to the world, and asking the U.S. to commit to global
responsibilities as well as care for our nation.
Obama's seriousness - not going for big poetic flourishes - daring to give
us lots to think about. The commentators had no one big quote to celebrate,
tho Obama is very capable of that. If that was a temptation for him, he
resisted it. What a great man!
The benediction - quoting from Lift Every Voice and Sing - the Negro
National Anthem - verse 3:
"God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way,
Thou who hast by thy might led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee,
Lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee,
Shadowed beneath thy hand, may we forever stand,
True to our God, true to our native land."
Words by James Weldon Johnson, set to music by his brother. In UM
Hymnal, many others.
And I agree - the 3 Amens!
It is wonderful to have this conversation. Thanks, Jim, for starting it.
