[Dialogue] The Inauguration:Pick Yourself Up

I was struck, as evidently were several of you, by President Obama's words in his address "pick yourself up, dust yourself off..."  I knew I had heard those words in a song and even remembered a bit of the tune, but couldn't remember where or when.  After a little research here's what I found:

The song, called "Pick Yourself Up," was written by Jerome Kern (music) and Dorothy Fields (lyrics), not sure when.  One of the first, if not the first, performances was by Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in a little skit where she is trying to teach him to dance and she sings the song to him.  It has since been done by many of the popular artists of that day and several more contemporary ones, like Dianna Krall and Natalie Cole.  (Natalie's dad Nat sang it too.)  The most recent rendition may be one from the sound track of the movie "Good Night and Good Luck" and performed by jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves.  Here are the lyrics.

Nothing's impossible, I have found.
For when my chin is on the ground,
I pick myself up, dust myself off,
Start all over again.

Don't lose your confidence if you slip.
Be grateful for a pleasant trip,
And pick yourself up; dust yourself off;
Start all over again.

Interlude:
Work like a soul inspired
'Til the battle of the day is won.
You may be sick and tired,
But you'll be a man, my son.

Will you remember the famous men
Who had to fall to rise again.
So take a deep breath;
Pick yourself up;
Dust yourself off;
Start all over again.

If you get a chance to hear it I think you'll enjoy it.  It's a catchy, singable tune.

How does that song go?  The one that starts "I am always falling down, but I know what to do.  I can pick myself up, Dust myself off, and start all over again."

Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.
