I sent this earlier in response to John Cock's post, but it doesn't seem to
be going through - so I will respond directly.
RE: article that states Lowery got a DD from the Chicago Ecumenical
Institute
Pretty sure this is not right - seems like what happened was an earlier
statement suggesting that Lowery also studied some at Garrett and the
Ecumenical Institute in Chicago - perhaps under Liebrech- has evolved into a
statement about his Doctor of Divinity - While the DD is an academic degree
in Europe, in the US, it is usually considered an honorary degree - Lowery
has received honorary degrees from several schools qand is therefore rightly
addressed as the Reverend Doctor. It is my understanding that his earned
degrees included a BA and a BD (Bachelor of Divinity, the precursor of the
M. Div.) Just a note, what is now earned by pastors as a secondary degree,
the D.Min. started first as a "Professional Doctorate" - read analogous to
M.D - at the University of Chicago particularly with its programs staffed by
the Federated Faculty) By the time I studied at Chicago, they had returned
to the M.Div. leaving the D. Min to other schools to award for those later
their careers in ministry grounded in advanced continuing studies of
practical theology.
