[Dialogue] claiming promises

Hi Kay,

We used the "claiming of the promises" for our son Jon and
daughter-in-law Jenna at the rehearsal dinner the night before their
wedding, following a conversation.  The context we set was something like
What special wish would you like to articulate for this couple and the
new family they are creating?  What promise would you claim for their
future?

It is always helpful if you can provide an example to get things started.

I think of this ritual as a kind of intercessory prayer -- an "on behalf
of" statement, proclaiming that something new come forth.  I imagine the
traditional "toast" to the bride and groom at wedding receptions is a
form of "claiming the promises."

In the Order we often addressed the spirit dimension through the promises
we claimed for one another at birthdays, and in so doing we "laid a
claim" on another's life to be fully his/her greatness in some particular
way.

What a gift to Dara that she will have these statements to reflect upon
following the celebration!

Let me give the details:
Dara, my daughter is graduation with a "masters in Business &
Sustainability" this weekend.
 
Instead a guest booklet, I have cut card stock paper into 1/4 and will
have each person that comes to your party at her home and mine, 
to "claim a promise" for her and put on the paper.
Then collect them, for her to remember.
 
I would like to write directions / definition, so as they get the card to
draw or write.
Who can describe / share the concept "claiming promises"?
