Randy and colleagues.
I finally got this database experiment online late yesterday at: http://macusa.net/mirror
I'll send an email to the listservs later today.
You ask the right question. Absolutely is my answer. I reckon that the
database should contain records of the particular articles and
documents held in the archives and links that take you directly to them.
I believe the larger question is how we go about updating the
technologies we use to contain and access our common memory and how we
engage lots of people in making connections between our memory and our
present world.
I found two articles from Wikipedia valuable in expanding my context
and stimulating my imagination (to borrow from imaginal education). A
couple of insights are suggested by these two articles. 1) Our real
challenge is not how to organize all the stuff that contains our
common memory, but how we mine what we know and apply it to the
future. (Knowledge management: The archive contains the raw ore in the
mining metaphor.) 2) (Social computing) We have access to technologies
that will help us use the capacity of a corporate mind to categorize
and link what we hold from the past with the issues of the
contemporary world.
This is a great conversation.
