In the fall of 1971 a young lad named James Wiegel was assigned to give an 
address on the The Dynamics of Research before the the Collegium of the 
Ecumenical Institute. He stated thaty thwere are four operating principles of 
research. He said: "The first is honor the past ­ 
that means you keep every scrap of paper -­ boxes and 
boxes. It doesn't matter whether you are sure you are going to use it 
or sure you are not going to use it. You almost want to say that it's a symbol 
that every word gets taken down because every word has got to do with that 
research" This seems to me to be the first srticulation of the a need to create 
a global archives.
