I'm reminded, Wayne, hearing of a LENS seminar around 1979-80, with the American Cybernetics Association (or equivalent).  I think Mike Vosler was one of the presenters.  I remember the comment from the participants - "at last a seminar which treats us cybernetically!" (or words to that effect).  Feedback loops - small group - plenary - small group - etc.  The flow of information/ communication/messages/etc to and fro.

I remember finding two influential books when browsing in the State Library of South Australia back in 1974.  One was The Way of All the Earth by John Dunne (before we studied it together).  The other was Platform for Change by UK cybernetics man, management theorist, writer and consultant, the late Stafford Beer.  After writing more theoretical and professional works, he decided to put some of his talks and articles together, spliced with pieces of his credo, and his developing thesis about community, society, freedom and communication flow.  Notable are (1) an account of his work with Allende in Chile, (2) how information systems can be use to deal with criminal investigations, instead of dramatically increasing the police force, and one other.  The "one other"?  A story about the Curia in Rome suggesting to Pope Pius XII that Teilhard de Chardin's works be banned forever, not just till the end of his life.  That austere man said "One Galileo per millennium is enough".  Beer added "I hope this story is true".

Check this article












I was fishing in our archives the other day and found this article on Cybernetics by William Cozart.  It was in a Nov 1966 is ue of “ie”, the newsletter of the day.  



Cozart was a key member of the Faith and Life Community and, from what I read, had his head screwed on the right way.



As I read the article, I got more and more excited. It could have been written in 2007 as well as 1967.  Real visionary thinking.
