The two best movements toward sustainable community development that I am aware of are the Transition Initiatives (launched in Ireland/England) and the Natural Step (launched in Sweden). Both have websites; and both have books written about their approach. Transitions has the most free material online to assist communities in developing their own sustainability. The Natural Step works more at the regional and organizational levels.

Transition US website is: transitionsus.org. The Natural Step Network-USA website is: www.naturalstepusa.org. Both of these also have global websites.
