Dear Colleagues,
I join those of you who have expressed their gratitude for the Kung letter.
The leadership of the Catholic Church is in dire need of conversion, but it still rejects the voices that for years have dared to speak "truth to authority." When dissension is silenced, mediocrity rises to the top, and more and more voices are stilled. A false understanding of religion is an insurmountable barrier to truth, a barrier built as the leadership piles what they were deeply indoctrinated to believe--by those above who themselves would brook no dissension--is the immutable truth of what they claim to be the one true church. A paradox of shameful proportions.
Hans Kung was one of those silenced years ago by Rome. Nevertheless, he has always sought rational ways to reach the irrational powers that be. In fact, that is why he was defrocked.
I do not know where, among the dioceses in America and other countries, there are a few strong bishops who could join forces and as a group force Rome to hear them out. Has there ever been? I pray that there are. Primarily for the sake of those individuals whom the church, in parishes and in Rome, has betrayed and hurt so profoundly; but also for the ordinary people who have been unable to see beyond the brainwashing.
Grace and Peace,
Lucille Chagnon
