My favorite of all time education quote is from Rabindranath Tagore -- perhaps portions of it could be selected in order to be usable.
Song of Free India (or "Our Tryst with Destiny")Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;Where knowledge is free;Where the world has not been broken up in fragments by narrow domestic walls;Where words come out from the depth of truth;Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;Where the mind is led forward by Thee into ever-widening thought and action --Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.~Rabindranath Tagore
My second favorite is from William Butler Yeats "Education is not filling a bucket but lighting a fire."
Song of Free India
(Or "Our Tryst With
Destiny")
Where the mind is without fear
and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has
not been broken up into fragments
by narrow domestic walls;
Where the
words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its
arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its
way
into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led
forward by Thee into ever-widening
thought and action--
Into that heaven
of freedom, my Father,
let my country awake.
--Guru Rabindranath Tagore
National Poet,
Freedom Fighter

Dear global (and local) ICA colleagues,
This is a sincere appeal from Jim Slotta in Denver, Colorado.
Our neighborhood public high school (Denver East High School) is undergoing renovation of its main entranceway. As a neighborhood leader, I'm deeply involved in the process. Success of the effort is highly dependent on the successful sale of commemorative bricks and various size pavers to cover much of the cost of the $250,000 project.
As can be seen (below) from comments by my awesome local colleague, Susan Bardwell, the group needs additional good quotes for the buyers of commemorative pavers to choose from. We are/she is not without ideas, but we're experiencing a time crunch resulting from a recent heavy advertising emphasis, and from the felt need to raise all necessary funds by the end of March, so construction can occur during the summer months.
Following Susan's personal appeal are links to some interesting background information about the project. Keeping in mind that the quotes are for individuals and families related to the school in many ways--including current students and their families, graduates and their families, teachers, local businesses and residents, et cetera--here is my ask:
>From your global and local engagements, please, if time permits, submit to me some quotes that I may then pass on to the quote selection committee for consideration. Quotes can be sent either back to the list serve or to my personal email address:

I (we) will be grateful for those quotes that you can provide.
Thanks in advance for your consideration. You can refer to the background information provided below.

(1) SUSAN BARDWELL'S PERSONAL APPEAL:================EVERYONE:
I think I've suggested this before, but there does seem to be a dearth of inspirational quotations in our list--there are some interesting/historical ones, but clearly not enough that are speaking to people. Mary Beth suggested that the committee will be soliciting more from the teachers. We need at least 50 more quotations, just to have one for each paver we need to sell per our goal, but without much choice. We need more SOON if we're serious about this next 2-month push!
Maybe the teachers could see the order website at a STAFF MEETING, see how the teachers' quotation selections are featured, and see how there is a lot of energy and progress. How about showing the KDVR clip? They will see their roll and how important it is to the project. Maybe show them the list of new, suggested quotations that teachers could "sponsor" on the website in order to get them--the teachers and the quotes!--online.
FYI, We are still selling several bricks a day and receiving even more inquiries.
Thanks!
