Note: I agreed to help Alison spread the word about Frank. I'm sending
this to my Directory email list and the listserves.
Grace and Peace,

Mike Tippett

Hi, global village! My name is Alison Powell; some of you may know my
parents, Frank and Sandy. Dad is still living in Kenya since we moved in '86,
remarried and had a son, and is now sharing
custody with the ex-wife. My brother is special needs, and requires a
good deal of care and occupational therapy that isn't cheap.

After
a long and expensive divorce, and a welcome but unexpected addition to
the family, Dad's finances have run on the low side lately. ln
February, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer,
but we have no idea what stage - he says he doesn't have the money to
get the test that will determine that, but knowing him, it's quite
possible he simply doesn't want to know. We do know that it has
spread, and he had his prostate removed when he got the news, but what
kind of treatment he'll choose to get is still up in the air. He is
getting hormone therapy and still isn't sure if he's going to get chemo
or radiation; both are
expensive and possibly far more painful than the illness itself. With
him in Kenya and me in Seattle, l've been feeling pretty helpless, so
this and the money issues he's having are both reasons for this appeal.

l have a trip to Kenya in September, and l'm looking to raise funds to
help him pay for his medical costs. ln this time of recession, l'm not asking
anyone to break the bank; if enough people can donate even ten bucks, it
adds up, and in Kenyan shillings, might make more of a difference. Please
understand that it's hard for me to ask this, l just don't know how else to
help. l'm pretty sure he'd kick my ass if he knew l was doing this; while
l will include his email at the bottom of this one and he would love to
hear from you, it might be easier if you don't tell him you donated anything
just yet. l will be presenting him with a traveler's check and a list of
all contributors and contact info for each so he can get in touch and thank
you personally. Otherwise, he wouldn't let me do this at all, but it needs
to be done, and l think he needs to know how much he's loved.

Many thanks in advance for your help, and please know l wouldn't ask if l
didn't think he desperately needed it. While checks and cash are welcome,
an online payment may be easier for some. You can send money online via
Paypal, and l'm pretty sure that all you need is my email (and your own
account) to do so, which is freikja at yahoo.com. My address is 2415 8th Ave. N.
#7, Seattle, WA 98109, and Dad's email is powell at usa.net. lf you send a
Paypal payment, please make sure to include your full name so l know who made
the donation and can pass it on.
Thank you so much for everything, and please feel free to get in touch
with me if you like or have any questions.
Much love and many thanks,
Alison
