Here is the correct web address for this organization: http://www.highlandercenter.org/
It appears they are still very acttive and encouraging grassroots organizing and movement building.

It is in the Tenn. Smokey Mountains. They are still involved in justice issues. I think most recently "Mountain Top Removal".. I think the song, "We shall Overcome" originated from there. www.highlandcenter.org

According to Wikipedia, "During the 1950s, [The Highlander Folk School] played a critical role in the American Civil Rights Movement. It trained civil rights leader Rosa Parks prior to her historic role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, as well as providing training for many other movement activists including Martin Luther King, Jr., James Bevel, Bernard Lafayette, Ralph Abernathy and John Lewis in the mid- and-late 1950s."

Hi Sunny,
I am coming to this really late, but when I first read your question and then later the one from Lucille, my mind went to the credit given to this school, I believe, at the Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis for having been the training ground of the civil rights movement leadership and especially the singing of the movement. At the time I read that statement at the museum, I was reminded of Mathews statements of the relationship between a movement and its singing.

Just ran across an old (2003) newsletter from Highlander Research and Education Center (New Market, TN) – the leard article is “Highlander’s Strategies for Movement Building . Begins with “ Highland continues in its 71-year tradition of supporting grassroots leadership in the South and Appalachia …The newsletter is also in Spanish. Anyway, just wondering re theirs and our paths having crossed at some point.
