We used the ORID method at Fifth City Preschool in the late sixties and
early seventies. Even the infants heard the questions, even when they didn't
understand them!
The basic structure I have used with children (I taught public school as
well as the preschools):
Objective: (as for a picture, or a field trip, or a book) What colors did
you see? What do you remember?
Who was in the story? What words do you remember?
Reflective: What did you like? What did you not like? What made you
laugh? Did anything make you upset or angry or want to cry?
Interpretive: What did you learn? What was it (the story, the event) all
about? Was there a lesson in it? What was the author trying to teach us?
Was there something brand new, that you never saw before or never thought
of before in it?
Decisional: Who would you like to tell about this (see this)? Who would
you like to go with us next time? If you had this (picture, etc.) where
would you keep it? What name would you give to this?
(I found that having the four levels in mind, in the order above, with one
question each, was adequate with the smallest kids.)
In mini-school (ages walking to toilet trained at Fifth City) we always
ended with "Bye-bye, picture (book, trip)", etc.

I had a phone conversation with Janice Critchlow who is involved in the
Mastering the Technology of Participation program in California. Her focus
of inquiry is using ORID with her grandchildren currently 3-6 years old.
Anyone have stories, guidelines or suggestions??
Janet tried a conversation with one of her grandchildren after a visit to
the state fair and she was quite surprised at how many remembered smells,
sights, sounds, etc.
