I just had the chance to watch the video of the Fred Buss memorial. What comes up for me is a story I heard sometime in the 1970's - but don't recall when or from whom. While it was memorable, truthfully I had my doubts as to whether it really happend. Until I heard these stories about Fred. It sounds like he was described.
The story was that Joe Mathews and a couple of others had just come from finishing an RS-1 - location not mentioned. They were feeling in very high spirits as they stopped to get gas in their car. Someone among the group engaged the gas station attendant in a conversation about what he was doing with his life. It so awed the young attendant that he finally asked, as they paid for their gas, "Say - what do you fellows do, anyway?"
The answer came out of an open car window, just as they were driving off:
"Oh -- we're grave robbers!"
A fair description of the efforts of O:E -- and that image has stayed with me, though I never talked about it before now. Has anyone else heard that story?

Subject: [Dialogue] Video of Fred's Memorial Service
The Memorial Service for Fred Buss occurred a week ago today. Several people urged us to prepare a video and make it available, Sarah, Fred's former wife, even wrote me with the suggestion that I should then sell DVDs at a marked-up price because she thought it would be in the spirit of Fred's own outrageous fundraising efforts (e.g., as reported on this listserv, he once asked people to take out second mortgages on their homes to support ICA's work in El Bayad).
In any event, we have posted a video, prepared by Jim Troxel, for those who would like to see it. The link below will provide you with easy access. If you who haven't visited our website recently, please look around while you are there. And if anyone should like to follow-up on Sarah's suggestion, you'll find a donate button on the home page (smile!). Whatever, we hope this visual offering will be one last fitting celebration of Fred's completed life.
