[Dialogue] Change belief

Darrell,

I had to read your piece twice to see what you are saying because I couldn't believe it the first time through. Do you really think that corporations (organizations) are the next spiritual level to the human being? There is no question we evolve spiritually and the social fabric we create and the story of that reality tends to unfold in a systematic way (see Ken Wilbur and Spiral Dynamics). But it is the human being that evolves. We may create more humane structures, a more enlightened society etc. but we're not going to surrender our being to some created structure, no matter how evolved form and how benevolent it is. We have been through several chapters of people being asked to die for the greater cause of the State, and we can all goose step off the cliff to some organizations as well. Sorry, but spiritual evolution will always be about humanness and if that humanness can create an evolved society and infuse those structures, whether they be state or corporations with love and compassion that act for the collective good and in the spirit of enlightenment then that is fantastic. If you want to get a taste of what that is go back and read Malachi Martin's book The New Castle that we studied in 75-76.

But thanks for adding to the conversation.

Grace & Peace,

Jack

I believe it would be well to refresh our memories of Ken Wilber's concept of holons. Holons are the necessary components of evolving higher structures. Atoms are holons of molecules, molecules are holons of cells, etc. Let me assert my belief that corporations are the next evolving level of spiritual development. A new creature is in the offing.

In a broader context I believe that a new, higher level of spiritual being is in the process of formation, a process that may evolve over the next thousand years. Our role as holons will be participants in the process but we will not be in control. The entity that evolves will be beyond our ability to comprehend and the God of that new entity will be much larger than the God of humans. How do we adapt to our role as holons? Will we be sustaining nutrients or threatening viruses?

It has a larger cosmic function, that of providing a necessary enzyme product for an entity beyond the ability of the holons to comprehend. This process of corporate evolution is identical to what lesser spirits experienced throughout evolution. At each level the holons thought that they were the ultimate end of creation. We humans likewise believe we are the ultimate end and the thought that evolution might move beyond us is outlandish. But it is happening before our eyes.

The hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water have from the beginning put limits on the function of the larger water molecule. Likewise I think it important that we holons get our input into the formation of the new corporate entity, not for our own self-serving purposes, but to see that the new entity provides a useful service to the cosmos. It is not helpful to visualize the corporation as demonic nor should we limit the function to that of serving only us, the holons. In this ongoing discussion I perceive visions of complexity that challenge our limited human concepts. What this new being having organs labeled as Google, Apple, and Goldman Sachs will look like we can't know. But it is interesting to watch the formative process. I believe that you are the yeast in the new bread.
