Steve,

What have you got against people sharing meaningful memories?  Nobody is making any suggestion that this story is something the future depends upon.  We (the OE) have been shaped and infused with meaning and values from the common experiences we have had.  I for one find these memories and common experiences (often the variety of perspectives add great flavor to what I experienced) meaningful and often these have given us insights and creativity that is indeed a source of what the future needs.  So please lighten up a bit!
