Yesterday, I was describing LENS methodology to Beth, wanting to bring her up to speed with my previous experiences. After I finished, she looked at me rather patronizingly and said, “We used that at Unity church in North Carolina in 2005 and it lit a fire in the belly of the church for a while. Unfortunately, a change in pastors let the fire go out. But the method really worked. The walls of the church were lined with data charts and members were really turned on.” I asked her how they came by the method, and she said the pastor got it at a denominational meeting in Kansas City and came back all fired up. The pastor had been at the church for twenty years, the church was in the doldrums and he was about to retire. He wanted to leave the church in better shape and the method allowed it to happen. Where the Unity denomination came by the method, I don’t know, but the way she described it, it had to be LENS (or some follow-on).
The roots of EI/ICA are still floating around within the culture and sprouts break the surface with new life every now and then. This afternoon at a planning meeting at our church (that derived from EI in the 1070’s), I am going to propose that the leading edge now is not working on government and NGO’s programs that try to “fix” people and their dire conditions, but rather for the church to train teams of members in methods that “enable.” Such teams could be offered to the community as a way of infusing “the Word” into the culture. I continue to believe that this is the core Gospel message.
Anyway, the methods are still germinating in fertile ground.
