Terry and I heard Bill Holmes give a series of talks on prayer in Denton in the 80s. Breath of fresh air. Thanks for sending this—Diann McCabe

Priscilla, you really kicked off a firestorm of insights into good books for study groups.
I'd like to add an obvious one: Bending History, selected talks of JWM. You might want to select among them for those most appropriate to the group, but I'd certainly recommend 'The Time My Father Died," and "Christ of History." If the group is more interested in effective approaches to local community development, then Bending History, Vol 2 would be helpful.
Another fine book for group study would be Mature Christianity by William A. (Bill) Holmes. He gave the keynote address at the Mathews Symposium and is retired from pastoring the national Methodist Church in Washington DC. He's also written a new one that is being published as we speak entitled The God Mask. Both books are quite good -- theological and practical.
Good luck

I belong to a women's book study group at Village Presbyterian Church. We have studied Marcus Borg, Karen Armstrong, Bruce Chilton's Rabbi Jesus, among others. We are just finishing Brian McLaren's A New Kind of Christianity. Brian is coming to our church in April to speak. Borg has been here also.
I consider our church on the edge re mission, pursuing the question of where the next phase of Christianity needs to take us, etc.
I would appreciate any suggestions for books from any of you. We finish McLaren in mid-March and haven't decided what next.
