Starting in 1965 the Movement's summer has been a
time for serious churchmen to gather in preparing themselves for
more effective understanding of and participation in the transformation
of the Church and reconstructing of world society.
Beginning with the Summer of 1970 the emphasis was
shifted to headon research. This International Research
Assembly has now become a time for the creation of practical models
utilizing the wisdom of local churchmen from all over the world.
In addition to practical research and training, the summer has
always been experienced as a depth breakloose in the spirit life.
The chart above shows the journey of the ten summers, 1965 to
1974.
Welcome
Welcome to Uptown As a temporary resident of Uptown,
while engaging the research task of the summer, you have the opportunity
to sense yourself as a part of one of the most sociologically
unique urban communities in the United States.
History
Uptown is one of the great historic neighborhoods
in the city of Chicago. First settled in 1847 it became part of
Chicago in 1889. Its residents were among the wealthiest in the
city and its business district was the first one developed beyond
the Loop In the 1920's. Uptown became a nationally famous entertainment
center with such features as the Edgewater Beach Hotel, the Aragon
Ballroom, and two large theatres, now the Uptocwn and Riviera
theatras. Whatever the movie showing, walking into the lobby of
the Uptown is well worth the price of the ticket. In the 1930's
the immigration of people of many nationalities began, resulting
in what is probably the most ethnically heterogeneos neighborhood
in North America The people of Uptown represent all six Urs and
every one of the nine continents. One community leader estimates
that as many as 57 languages are spoken in the local high school.
The major groups American Indian, Spanish American,
Black, Chinese, Japanese, Asian Indian, Appalachian White and
European White have constituted this unique community
for forty years
Neighbors
Of course, we remain aware that we are new neighbors
in Uptown. The community is at least curious about the Institute
and its work. Therefore, while we are welcome in local business
establishments, we seek at this time to maintain a low profile
relationship with local residents ant merchants. Though we are
not trying to avoid conversation, nor are we trying to create
it relative to the life and mission of the Institute.
Safety
Minimal precautions provide far our safety. Always
walk with one or several others, especially at night. Stick to
the main streets that are welllighted. Get good directions
before you leave the building and travel directly to your destination
Go on the Eltrain at least in pairs. Remember that the bus
requires exact change.
