Wave Conversation

INTRODUCTION

1. The process of discerning the primary sociological movement of our 20th century is the objective for instituting the "Wave" conversation. The purpose of this paper is to bring into focus the results of the conversation, and research the method and the implication of the "Wave" conversation. The four categories of research are the development of the sociological wave, the structure (theory and practice) of conversation, wave conversation result analysis and the implications of using the Wave conversation. It is the anticipation of the research team that the conversation methodology will become a useful tool to enable secular and religious persons to grasp the meaning and purpose of the great "Wave" of the 20th century.

SOCIOLOGICAL

CONTEXT

Development of the Sociological Wave

2. Since the beginning of consciousness, man has been involved in one revolution after another. Consciousness itself was a revolution. The first groupings of people into a group known as a community, the invention of the wheel, and the invention of the printing press were revolutions. The Protestant Reformation and the Great Enlightenment were religious revolutions. The 18th century Political Revolution and the 19th century Industrial Revolution, are all examples of how history has been radically transformed. Revolutions such as these, propelled people into the future with such force and magnitude, that a radical transformation occurred within society. Our own century 20 reveals our time is one of great magnitude. From the perspective of the year 3000 it will probably be considered to be the biggest wave that has swept mankind and will be equal to the power of the "wave of consciousness" millions of years ago. As it swept through the years, it too called for a decision whether or not to participate within the movement of the wave. The sociological decision to participate in the wave of the times gives the authenticity of meaning for everyman's life.

SOCIOLOGICAL

MYTH

3. A story of how this wave occurs, is a helpful instrument to hold the dynamics of the sociological manifestation. "The whole universe is a timeless ocean that every man lives in. The ocean at times has its calmness as well as violent storms. No matter what age there are numerous waves that have swept across the history of man. Each wave began slowly out of the backwash of the last wave and begins to take form which builds up a powerful momentum through time. There now exists within the 20th century, a wave yet unknown that is forming and building up with momentum. Discerning the wave is complicated because of the numerous waves started which turned out to be merely ripples. The man of century 20 finds himself afloat in the ocean of life and has risen and fallen on the small wave. The man has a serious decision, "Which one of the waves will be the great wave that will carry me into the future?" Not only does man see the waves, but realizes he must have something that will carry him on the wave into the next century. Within his mind, comes the idea, the vocational call to be the surfer to ride the waves. He looks around and spots pieces of wood which he puts together in order to make his own surfboard. Upon finishing it he begins to wonder how does one surf the big wave. He realizes he has to understand the formation, manifestations, timing, and implications, so he turns to the surroundings to discern the underlying currents that will propel the great wave into the future of time. That man becomes the sociological surfer who becomes skilled at diagnosis and riding techniques of the ocean of life. The man's fate is that he must decide which one is the wave that will carry him into the future. He may choose what he thinks is the great wave only to find out later that he sank into the water. The danger which lurks is his believing that the great wave is this one and to his surprise it isn't. The surprise comes from his falling and being swept under by the next wave. He is aware that others have tried and failed, only to end up like thousands of others who have drowned because they couldn't keep afloat in the 20th century. He knows he must decide what wave he will ride to a new day. Will he make it or will he not? This story described mythologically, the journey of the importance and dynamics of the "sociological wave conversation." Within this context we present this report, on behalf of all the people of the globe.
SOCIAL METHOD 4. The sociological wave conversation is not a spirit conversation. It is not a workshop but rather a conversation dealing with the sociology of our time. It is an intentional situation reflection, that deals with objectifying what is already occurring within the social processes. The depth of intuition reveals the thrust that is manifested within society at this time of history. The revealed consciousness uncovers the power of the wave that is passing through the 20th century.
SOCIOLOGICAL

PARTICIPATION

5. The sociological wave conversation results in a new

awareness of the Revolution within our times. The articulation of the wave, that is grounded in sociological manifestations is the revolution of century 20. That revolution which is sweeping across the century cannot be avoided and is forcing us to authentically relate ourselves to it. Once the focus of the sociological wave is articulated, then the sociological manifestations enable us to use them for the sake of humanizing the globe and catalyzing others to awareness and participation in the wave. Both results enable us to be buoyed up and propelled into the future. The naming of the wave is the sociological indicative that states our own participation in the wave. The key to our present and continued research enables us to continue as a movement without fading out of existence. Or in terms of the sociological myth, we are able to ride the wave, rather than be drowned or crushed under the wave. Our results may demonstrate how to enable more effective and smoother momentum into our future in the last third of the 20th century.

CONTEXTUAL

FRAMING

Structure, Theory and Practice

6. The wave conversation is a corporate methodology designed to call forth a group's intuitive wisdom by enabling it to step beyond clearly observable trends in order to see the wave behind the trends that will carry us into the 21st century. Setting the context for the conversation involves talking about the different waves of the past, such as the Protestant Reformation and the Industrial Revolution. Past waves were named centuries after their impact was over. It is the group's task in this conversation to define the wave of the present, so that society will not drown or get crushed by it, but will be able to ride the wave successfully into the future. The corporate methodology gives a greater possibility of discerning the wave which will carry us into the future.

STRUCTURE

0F INQUIRY

7. The first question, "What's happening" or "What's going on in a certain area?" is out to create a data montage. A shift takes place at the second question, discerning trends and currents behind the objective date. Trends are gestalted intuitively and the wave named from the prospective of 1000 years from now.
DYNAMIC

OPERATION

8. The dynamic of the first question is to release a data flood from the participants. The pace is fast, light and great fun. The second question which is reflective, results in a complete gear change as the mood slows as participants look at data. The focus of the conversation remains on sociological trends and is not to turn to spirit trends. The third question is a struggle to discern behind all the trends the wave which is the one to ride into the future. It allows participants to get a handle on the future and lay claim to it. In the midst of this struggle intuitive motivity is released to allow participants to deal with the conversation.
LEADERSHIP

ROLE

9. A basic part of this conversation is the recording

of data secured from question answers over the days the conversation is done. Therefore it is very important that complete and accurate notes be kept. The leader keeps the conversation flowing. He insists on an actual naming of the wave. Creative limits need to be pushed to allow participants to move beyond the present and name the name of the great wave.

SUMMER '74

RECORDS

Wave Conversation Result Analysis

10. During the first 2 weeks of Summer '74, 36 Guilds participated in Wave conversations, concluded by the writing of a paragraph to express the group consensus. The Scribe's notes and final paragraphs were analyzed in the third week of the Summer Program. It was found that bonus from the conversations was the montage of sociological data which could be used to inform the Movement just as the LENS course data has been used. Careful review of similar data from the future will demonstrate the usefulness of the Wave Conversation model.

DATA CROSS

GESTALTED

11. A cross gestalt of the raw data, and paragraph summary revealed four major trends; A) awakening and responding, B) intensified seeking for individual fulfillment, C) radical recognition of global interdependence, D) corporate engagement.

A) Awakening and responding to relative stability: Today, countless individuals are being confronted with a new consciousness of an interior struggle, resulting in life responses, born of a number of sociological factors, such as awakening to relative stability, the collapse of the relationships between loca1 man and his representatives, governments, and major industries.

B) Intensified seeking for individual fulfillment: The human quest for individual fulfillment has been stepped up as lucidity about the meaninglessness of life has increased. The quest is exhibited by many and varied types of behavior such as

decisional phobia, experimentation with personal styles, changing vocational involvement, the serial family and wild personalism, to name just a few.

C) Radical recognition of global interdependence: A third trend discerned by the Guilds is that of radical recognition of global interdependence, and the realization that each man is a part of complex, pluralistic relationships. The interdependence of all people has been brought into focus by space travel, imminent collapse of the environment, depletion of natural resources, and the apparent shift from an earthoriented to universeoriented mind set. Pluralistic relationships have resulted in cultural awareness and the emergence of the world citizen.

D) Corporate Engagement: From all these factors has come the urge to engage meaningfully in the immediate local situation and in larger arenas where corporate impact and power can effectively bring about comprehensive decision making.

RESEARCH

SCREENING

PROCESS

  1. Through the use of the Wave Conversation Model, trends were identified, clarified and named. While the guilds struggled to identify the Wave which the trends reflected, the Wave of the 20th Century was neither clearly identified nor named. The research team took the data crossgestalt and pulled it through the screen of the Social Process Triangles.

Two gestalted trends

a)awakening and responding to relative stability, and

b) intensified seeking for individual fulfillment-were placed under Ultimate Concern in Final Meanings of Communal Wisdom in Cultural Commonality.

The second two trends-

c) radical recognition of global interdependence and d) corporate engagementwere placed under Community Groupings in Social Structures of Communal Styles in Cultural Commonality. During reflection on the locations on the Social Process Triangles of these trends, we discerned the movement of these trends up ward towards Communal Symbols. We also noted that these trends were in or adjacent to three of the nine pressure points. In future years, this movement probably will show social manifestations in the arena of Communal Symbols. The technique of using the Social Process Triangles became the research screen which focused the data within the sociological dynamics of society. The research team, while looking at the triangles

brainstormed intuitive names. Somehow the name broke in through the brainstorm.

The wave that is sweeping across the 20th Century is the Age of Resurgent Love. To participate in riding the wave is to participate in the reclamation of Global Love. "Reclamation" is the process of deriving useable materials from waste products. The Global Reclamation is the process whereby the people will take the destroyed and collapsed symbol structures and rebuild from the ashes the symbols of the whole globe. Although there will be new symbols, what these symbols point to is not new because the reality beneath the symbols is always there and will be reclaimed. For example, we have always known that we are part of one world, part of all mankind. The current symbols have collapsed because they did not remind nor point to the reality of the sociological manifestation of one world. The new symbols are a rearticulation of the intensified experience we have encountered in one world.

FIRST

REFLECTION

INSIGHTS

13. The Wave Conversations of Summer 74 had several

benefits for the corporate life of the Movement.

First, they allowed a time in the day to reflect at the most universal and comprehensive level, rather than at the very particular level of the practical guild work.

Secondly, they gave us a way to invent a new story, to describe the history of our times; previously the only tool available was the more rigorous workshop method.

Thirdly, the conversations suggest a possible way of seeking inclusive corporate contributions to the Movemental Data Research Net. Keeping careful records of these conversations while holding them at many types of gatherings around the globe could bring some helpful images into the Movemental common mind. Research Centrum could send out prepared forms with the formats for specific conversations and perform the interpretative task upon the date when it has been returned.

INTERIOR

STRUGGLE

EXPOSED

Future Use And Implications

14. Being on the edge is a journey in which it becomes increasingly difficult to discern the spirit issue. In our underlying desire to escape, we call upon our familiarity with the methodology as a means to prevent encountering the life address. New spirit methods, therefore, are created to contain the surprise in order to prevent the escape and release the struggle in such a way that no one is aware of the method used to reveal the awe until it is too late: the surprise happens and I am caught once more in dealing with my life.

15. The Wave conversation methodology appears through its frame to be a method of looking at happenings in society, reflecting on the trends which are manifesting themselves and then discerning the wave of the future from the trends. Since this is so direct and is in a sociological context, the stage is set for the surprise. The surprise happens at the point of naming the wave which will sweep the twentieth century. In naming or even refusing to name it, the struggle of the dark night is encountered, that is, not wanting that which is therethe world and not seeing it as glory in the Long March, i.e. the load of caring for the world.
16. The conversation leaves open the life question of deciding to set out on the long march of care while remaining in the dark night.
REFINING THE TECHNIQUE 17. The first question of the conversation as it now stands seems both adequate and critical. It provides the montage of objective data necessary, prior to sifting for more visibly cohesive trends. The transition between the two events and then trends in the midst of events seems inevitably sharp, simply because of the differences in the two kinds of mental activity required of the participants. One appropriate way to handle these transitions and this is the only firm recommendation for alteration of the construct that we would make is that each question should be contexted by giving a review of the answers to the preceding question. In other words, before asking for the wave, read back what the group has had to say about trends, etc. The effect is, to allow the group a period in which to make the shift between one type of mental

activity, one type of answer, and another. Hence people are enabled not simply to continue spinning out more trends when asked to name the "wave", but to engage in the actual struggle to declare a name for one reality. Other questions, either to ease transitions or elicit more data, may be developed and used, depending upon the conversation leader's sense of purpose of his use of the Wave Conversation.

REFLECTIONS ON

POSSIBLE

REVISION

18. A question which would enable the group to prepare for naming the wave (or the decisional level) may need to be included. This question should journey the group

through a second reflection on the trends and ask for a grounding of them. It would take the form of - "How do you see these trends being manifested?" The concretion of naming the manifestation objectifies the naming of the trends.

  1. The element of surprise is essential to getting at the spirit question so the dynamic of maintaining the image of a secular sociological conversation is key at the reflective level. To internalize the question of care for the sociological process too soon is not to push to the depth of it. The technique of keeping the conversation on the external level could be done through "plotting" the trends on the social process triangles.

20. The question which calls for looking back from the future is a difficult one to answer. To name the wave would represent the decision to be responsible for that which was named - the world and the burden of its care. The prospect of knowing the glory of the Long March comes only through engaging in the world and the social process as the concretion of caring.

FUTURE USE

  1. Implications for future use include some cautions, one of which is to maintain the dynamic of a news conversation as a way of objectifying the dark night in terms of society.

  1. The experiment of using the scribe is a possibility for future research on effect of the wave and on how to maintain the tension between the internal struggle with the dark night and the external acting out of that data would need to be created and maintained.

  1. Further evaluation of effectiveness of "wave" as a means of dealing with news relative to society would need to include information about experiments with alternative formats. One such format has been created and submitted to Research Centrum for further study.

  1. Social methods are the tools to enable an effective transition and embodiment of the dark night on the long march to concretize the arena whereby one acts out his love of God.
