[Oe List ...] Research on Bonhoeffer

[John Cock]

Bonhoeffer was originally charged with sticking State money in his
pocket, then with using the money to help Jews out of Germany; he was
imprisoned. Only later did Nazis discover that he -- along with brother
and brother-in-law -- was connected to the July 20, 1944, assassination
attempt, the most famous of more than a dozen attempts. I could not find
anything about his direct involvement in the attempt, only that he knew
about it; he was already in prison when it happened. After hanging the
terrorists -- many with piano wire -- Hitler committed suicide at end of
the same month, April 1945. 

So Bonhoeffer helped get his man and bent history.

Lucille, it's not the anniversary of Bonhoeffer's death (April 9, 1945)
but of the attempt on Hitler's life, as I understand it. Also, just saw
that today is the 35th anniversary of the moon landing, when Armstrong
made the "one small step for man . . . one large leap for mankind"
statement. I was huddled in Room E on Trumbull and was awed [notice the
operating images of the time, "man" and "mankind"]. Our history has been
great. Our future can be greater. Herman Greene passed along Lester
Brown's talk to conference of Friends on the theme of Plan B, his new
book -- since plan A is not working. Listen to his talk and read his
