[Oe List ...] Alleene Watson

In 1979 I was assigned briefly to the Houston House. For the four months I
was there, I was in charge of the menu planning. At first I was petrified,
never having held this assignment before. I went to the library and checked
out books on nutrition (the beginning of what has become a lifelong
preoccupation with healthy eating). In the midst of feeling overwhelmed by
the task, I was delighted to be informed that Aleene Watson volunteered her
time each week to do the grocery shopping for the house. Every week I would
make a menu and grocery list, then call Aleene. She took my list to the
grocery store and returned with a carload of food. I wrote her a check and
she went on her way. It was wonderful. I learned all kinds of little tips
from her (Scott toilet paper, single-ply, lasts the longest for the least
money) and she was a great bargain hunter for us. Her quiet steadiness
certainly bolstered my confidence in an area where I felt so inadequate. I
have always thought that her very concrete, tangible contribution, made with
absolutely no fanfare, was a real act of generosity. I'm sure those who
filled the menu-planning shoes before and after me felt the same way. She
was a lovely person, and I'm certain she will be greatly missed.

Marsha
