As a little girl growing up on the West Side, Vance was one of my favorite
adults. I had a little-girl crush on him, as I think a lot of the girls did.
I remember him as fun and playful and always nice to us kids. I vaguely
remember telling him not to get married until I grew up--or something like
that. My most specific memory of that time was that he was either taking care
of Marsha & me while our parents were teaching courses or he was on E.G. for
the weekend ... in any case I was sick with something odd--I think it was the
time I broke out in horrible hives--and he took care of me. It's funny to
think of it now: this young bachelor figuring out how to take care of a sick
little girl.
I've had the opportunity to see Vance a number of times since I moved to
Bloomington--thanks to his visits here to visit Michael May. And I've always
been curious each year to see his very interesting and well put together
Christmas mailings. But most of all I will always think of Vance as the
handsome young man who was so great with the kids at a time and place when
being a kid was anything but carefree.
You live on in all of us, Vance. You won't be forgotten.
With love,
Shelley Hahn
