What Herman says is correct, and, I think, applies today as well. Kindness seems always in short supply, and it is always striking to run into someone who cares, the more so when they seem to have some recognized success.
I even recall a certain Bill (this is an old memory) in a checkered bathrobe being awakened before dawn and expressing a certain gratefulness at the person ringing the bell . . .

Kindness could be in short supply in those days. Some of us seemed to take it as a leftover of Christian moralism for others, it got in the way of our persistent attempts to dis-illusion one another. For others, the sense of mission justified giving short shrift to those who seemed less capable or clear in their own thinking. Kindness was often quite a feat in that time.

Good follow up. We were in that period of "Those Who Care." Len had gained some notoriety and wealth, and yet he cared. Admittedly on my part there was some of that young person's awe for a person who dressed so well and was so physically impressive. I was in awe of the whole North Shore Group.
There was one other thing about Len, he was kind. In a way I wish I had something deeper to say. Altogether it is that Len made a deep impression on me, not necessarily of a "jolly green" giant, but of a giant in his own right.

How was he a "hero"?

While still quite young, I was in the North Shore House and consequently was part of the North Shore Group with Len Dresslar and others. He was a hero for me.
