Dear colleagues

With a heavy heart I am reading all your news and comments about Katrina and New Orleans. It all resinates as I am a survivor of Cyclone Tracy in Darwin Christmas 1974.

Particularly resonating is Del Morrell's email which said in part (following a bit about mourning our losses) "......value the opportunity for expanded consciousness and determine to recreate ourselves, our world...."

Darwin too was total devastation, not so many lives lost because probably not so large a city. Two years after the Cyclone the Government had not done anything to assist rebuilding the city, hoping we would all go away in fear and they would not have to do much. Well, we would not go away. We loved our Darwin and determnined to rebuild it better than before. The ICA was very much a part of this, choosing the suburb of Parap as a demonstration Primal Community to show us what people could decide and do ourselves. The events, of course, included celebration who we were and I think our multiculturalism and our continued celebration of that stems from what we did then.

Darwin today is progressive and beautiful and the pride of its citizens.

I am sincerely praying for an eventual outcome like this for New Orleans. After Cyclone Tracy Australia put together very good emergency response policies built off the experiences. If these forces were not offered to New Orleans they should have been. We have had the experience and have learned from it.

Take courage New Orleans.
