Hello dear friends and family,
Justin is home (since Monday) and is healing rapidly and happily. The day
he was due to go home, we walked into the room to find chaos had broken
loose re: the apparatus not holding, leakage everywhere, and on top of that,
Justin was running a fever. Very upsetting day, because no way were we
going to be able to take him home with a fever and a stoma apparatus that
wasn't doing its job properly. At last, by 6:30 pm, we had the go-ahead and
got the hell out of that place!!! You might be as amused as we were, by the
way, that two of his nurses had asked him at different times whether he had
had a bowel movement. That gives you some idea of the level of nursing
knowledge of his situation; let alone how to put his apparatus on properly.
The stoma is on his right side rather close to his scar, so it was more
difficult to figure out how to attach the bag and its surrounding ring.
But, at last, he's now home, and doing great. He gets quite tired at times,
but he's spending much more time out of bed visiting, talking on the phone,
etc. All 3 of the girls were here, with Anita going back to her
principal-ship at school during the day and visiting after school; Genevieve
came back up for the big transition, and has had to return to her own work
in L.A.; and Eileen is here with us this week, being a fantastically big
help. The home visiting ET nurse specializes in stoma therapies and
surgical healing and will be here 2x a week, especially to help with the
change of apparatus for the stoma therapy, until he can do it himself. (By
the way, she is the ONLY E.T. nurse in the Home Visit system in the entire
country! And she LOVES her work! Needless to say, she gave Justin a lot of
confidence and encouragement. Also, we have wonderful neighbors - she's a
nurse who has included herself in the stoma training, and her husband is a
military surgeon. Justin will have to "wear" the "bag" for anywhere from 3-6
months until he heals within, completely; then his "interior design" surgeon
will have him in his hands once again! Let's hope that time will be far
less eventful than the other 3 surgeries this past month. Somewhere down
the line, he is also to have a rotator cuff surgery - have no idea when
he'll be given a "clean bill of health" to allow that to take place.
Whatever, we'll take it as it comes, even though it may mean putting off our
trip to Budapest in September.
Many, many thanks for your wonderful prayers and good wishes, e-mails, cards
and calls. I don't know if you're aware of just how meaningful your messages
have been for him and his attitude and healing.
I'm also grateful.

P.S. Couldn't resist the following take on a most familiar routine!
Thought you might enjoy a laugh during these strange political climate and
economic crises and social traumas, as well as the personal tragedies and
difficulties amongst our own friends and colleagues.
You have to be old enough to remember Abbott and Costello, and too old to
REALLY understand computers, to fully appreciate this. For those of us who
sometimes get flustered by our computers, please read on...
If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous sketch,
"Who's on First?" might have turned out something like this:
COSTELLO CALLS TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM ABBOTT
ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: Thanks. I'm setting up an office in my den and I'm thinking about
buying a computer.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: No, the name's Lou.
ABBOTT: Your computer?
COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.
ABBOTT: What about Windows?
COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?
ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?
! COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look at the windows?
ABBOTT: Wallpaper.
COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.
ABBOTT: Software for Windows?
COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write
proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do you have?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?
ABBOTT: I just did.
COSTELLO: You just did what?
ABBOTT: Recommend something.
COSTELLO: You recommended something?
ABBOTT: Yes.
COSTELLO: For my office?
ABBOTT: Yes.
COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTE! LLO: Yes, for my office!
ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.
COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let's just say I'm
sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I need?
ABBOTT: Word.
COSTELLO: What word?
ABBOTT: Word in Office.
COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.
ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.
COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?
ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue "W".
COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue "w" if you don't start with some
straight answers. What about financial bookkeeping? You have anything I can
track my money with?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?
ABBOTT: Money.
COST ELLO: I need money to track my money?
ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.
COSTELLO: What's bundled with my computer?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?
ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.
COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?
ABBOTT: One copy.
COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?
ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.
COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?
ABBOTT: Why not? THEY OWN IT!
(A few days later)
ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off?
ABBOTT: Click on "START".............
