The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada is a dandy movie with redemption as the key theme. Sophie Stoll is a very powerful movie to me, and it certainly raises the god question. Look Both Ways is a strong movie which constantly raises the mortality question. Joyeaux Noel is the story of the soldiers in opposing trenches laying down their arms after hearing hymns sung at Xmas in Europe during WW I.
For older classics: Rashomon : Kurosawa-Japan (Four characters desribe a particular event with all four naturally convinced they are merely reporting the truth--a minor wrinkle in that all the stories are nearly totally different.) (A must see, in my opinion, for anyone who loves the movies
Kagemusha- another remarkable Kurosawa creation where the substitute for the emperor begins to "be" the emperor. Fascinating but utlimately an unhappy come-uppance at the conclusion
Au Revoir Les Enfants - French - includes coming of age with kids puzzled at the religious modes of the world. Also a story of remarkable courage, compassion and sacrifice.
I love a millionm other titles but this is a possible start.

PS For Brokeback Mountain you've got to look up the cover for the New Yorker for February 27th of this year. The cover shows Bush and Cheney (blowing smoke from a shotgun) as Jack and partner-- a cover with the title "Watch your back mountain".

We have been putting on a monthly movie at our Cohousing for members of our Church with fine conversations afterwords. I could use some suggestions for movies that produce good conversations. So I'm glad to list some of our more recent successes and in exchange receive any good ideas you have.
Our excellent ones recently include:
The Constant Gardener
Whale Rider
Crash (excellent conversation)
Khandahar
Iron Jawed Angels (An HBO movie that many don't know about but excellent about the struggle to
obtain the women's vote)
Bonhoeffer
Luther
North Country (this week)
On the list as coming attractions:
Transamerica
Brokeback Mountain
