Pat Stewart taught my first RS-I in Seattle at a convent - as 2nd teacher. Bruce Bauknight was first and Pat's daughter Candi was 3rd teacher. For me it was a very profound event. Actually Candi was the one who nailed me with the vocation question. And though she was very young, would not let me off the hook.
The next time I saw Pat was in San Francisco when John and I went to be at John's brothers - Jim's Boones marriage to Candi. It was there that I had my one and only conversation with Joe Mathews - if you can call it that. He said, "I called you you know" "I'll be calling you again." He was on his way to Majuro where I was assigned the next year. And interesting thing - he is true to his word. He never stops calling.
Also on the day Pat died, this past Thursday, I was with Joe Watson, Joe Mathews brother-in-law when he died. I had just arrived in Houston a few hours before for a Mothers of the New Earth Retreat. I was staying with Debra Harris Watson and she told us the hospice had called . We went immediately and 40 minutes later Joe passed away. It was a very spiritual event. First with the minister who came before Joe died and commended Joe to God, and then with the rest of the family as we read the Tibetan Book of the Living and the Dead, learning about how we can help those who have passed over, even when it's been a long time. But the first 21 days are the most important - and then up to the 49th day. We all held hands around the bed and chanted Om Mane Padme Hum - for a long time. It was very powerful - full of deep Mystery and Awe. We could see how we are all souls - we came in to do some work together. Even the times we have hurt or wounded each other - it was to learn lessons - but at the soul level we are one and we love each other. We felt that, as a group. It was a very great blessing. I had certainly not planned it.
So I bow to Pat Stewart as a women who was instumental - who served the Lord - who called me into the Divine Mission of the Order Ecumenical - and somehow through being there when I talked with JWM - and then dying when Joe Watson died, I am connected to in a strange way. I am forever grateful and I will pray for her. I know our prayers help those who have passed over to the Other Side.
  Grace and Peace,
  Roseanne Eleanor Sands
