A poem that Donna Ziegenhorn sent me this morning...written by a
friend of hers.
IT’S IN THE AIR
When I was a child,
my mother pinned one leaf
of an air plant to the gauzy curtain
in the sunshine at the window, and there
it hung for days hungering only for air
and light even with a pin piercing its heart.
Having helped her start her garden
with my small pail and spade as she set
the plants that promised blossoms even
in the shade, and stretched string tight
for the morning glory that looked nothing
like a climber in its bed,
I watched amazed when she fixed the fragile
leaf in thin air high above my head.
And when I asked about its watering,
she said, It’s in the air—all it needs
to live and grow is in the air.
As the tendrils began to show, I had my first
theological thought at five, deciding then
I knew the most I would ever need to know
about the one they called the Holy Spirit.
And when I asked about the likeness, my mother,
who loved to sing, laughed like music…
and it was spring.
