Just to say, reports like this fill my heart with song and remind me how great life is. What a way to start a day.

  Thanks,

    A Magical Christmas

How do you honor four significant life events during a Christmas holiday? This was the question for Christmas, 2006.

Grandpa, my husband of fifty-four years, had turned eighty years old.
Our Oregon son, Tim, had reached the half-century mark of fifty.
Out first granddaughter-in-law, Phaedra, had turned thirty years of age.
And in a different genre, Jeff, our twenty-four year old grandson, had served his time in the Army and become a civilian again.

Costa Rica swirled to the top of the list of possibilities for a magical Christmas for fourteen people ranging in age from 2 ½ to 80.

At the end of a long, tooth-jarring drive from San Jose to the Pacific Coast, Quepos presents a spectacular seascape setting. A couple of miles further is Manuel Antonio National Park, where trogons, herons, squirrel monkeys and sloths range. Buena Vista Villas in the Park accommodated our multi-interest crew with three rented Casas. We swam in a choice of several pools, but the mountainside waterfall pool quickly became the favorite.

Memorable moments were so many. The zip line for the bravest, the catamaran ride and seeing the dolphins, the photo-ing of monkeys, sloths, sun sets and kids playing. The family laughter, the care and grace of the Costa Ricans who work at Buena Vista, the Mariposa Hotel dinner, and the group photos – so much to remember with love. The lovely Casas, the birds, even the steps and hills, the stunning scenery – so much to look back on with joy in my heart.

A radical mix of different ages, passions, beliefs, values, hopes and dreams shapes this family of fourteen. We love each and respect the gifts and warts of everyone.

Christmas magic floated through the air on Christmas Eve
hors d’oeuvres, drinks and group pictures set the tone for an evening of memories, hopes and dreams. Sitting in a circle on the open deck
over-looking the setting sun sink into the Pacific Ocean
we shared (one at a time) memories of Christmas memories special for us.

Celebrating the four special occasions provided a spectacular end to 2006 and beginning of 2007. It offered a grateful chance to “be family” and to greet life’s ups and downs with delight, courage and hope.

Will tomorrow be here soon? ... of course it will. Not once has tomorrow not been here, but what about yesterday? Where is it now? It will be gone to us . . . like today will be long gone ... When tomorrow comes around. -- Dodge Chatto 1975
