One time I was taking a bus in Manhattan from the Port Authority 
across 42nd Street to the UN area for a Women in Development 
Symposium meeting. There was one other person on the bus, a really 
scruffy man sitting in the front. I was carrying a bunch of stuff, 
walked to the back and didn't really look closely at him. After I got 
seated I looked toward the front and thought to myself, that he 
looked familiar. I kept looking at him, wondering where I'd seen him 
before. Then he looked up, glanced around the bus and saw me. He gave 
a shout and a big hello. I then recognized him. He was a major 
character from Uptown Chicago who was always wandering the streets. 
When I'd seen him we always said hello and exchanged a few words. I 
said "Hi" and waved and it was time to get off the bus. I never knew 
his name. No one else got on the bus and he didn't get off. I expect 
he was staying warm.
