One time I was taking a bus in Manhattan from the Port Authority
across 42nd Street to the UN area for a Women in Development
Symposium meeting. There was one other person on the bus, a really
scruffy man sitting in the front. I was carrying a bunch of stuff,
walked to the back and didn't really look closely at him. After I got
seated I looked toward the front and thought to myself, that he
looked familiar. I kept looking at him, wondering where I'd seen him
before. Then he looked up, glanced around the bus and saw me. He gave
a shout and a big hello. I then recognized him. He was a major
character from Uptown Chicago who was always wandering the streets.
When I'd seen him we always said hello and exchanged a few words. I
said "Hi" and waved and it was time to get off the bus. I never knew
his name. No one else got on the bus and he didn't get off. I expect
he was staying warm.
