[Oe List ...] {Disarmed} EI & Church Federation

The politically correct language was "an autonomous division" of the Church Federation of Greater Chicago. Actually, having a legally separate organization with a separate board and separate 501.c3 tax status was fiscally necessary in order to shoulder the huge mortgage on the Bethany seminary property.
I looked up the Church Federation, and best I can tell, there's nobody home @ their official address, which is 112 E. Chestnut St, Chicago, no phone, no pets, no cigarettes, and no website. However, there is a Greater Chicago Broadcast Ministries Corporation @ that same address. I 'spect this is the surviving remnant that was the Radio & TV department of the Church Federation back in the days of Edgar Chandler.
Moral of the story seems to be: when the money, the constituencies, the missional focus, and the reason d'etre all go away, nonprofits get put on the shelf, or become moribund. They don't actually get legally dissolved. Just become inactive. Note: IRS in 1937 decided the Church Federation was a 'church', so they don't have to file Form 990, which means they don't have to disclose their financials.

I got to read the notes in the Management Centrum files. It basically said that EI was going to be bigger than it once it got the West Side Property so they better go out on their own. 1963 that was.

I understood that there was an amicable parting between EI, once a program of the Federation and the Federation mid 60s (?) where EI became a separate organization.

Apparently EI exists on paper as a 501.c3, with a BoD and an executive, annual Form 990's, real estate ( 4750 N. Sheridan Road ), and whatever staff it takes to keep the real estate minimally operational. So it's a landlord with a lot of rental income, government grants for renovations, etc., but not much else programatically. And oh yes, the Archives!
So what happened to the Church Federation of Greater Chicago?
