I didn't mean to imply the song was from the Sound of Music--anyway, that would be Austria and not Germany. My personal experience is making the effort to sing our words to some German young men and they laughed at me and then were incensed because the tune, "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" was popular during WWII in Nazi Germany.
Our words are great, but being ignorant in several languages can get us into trouble and not know it. Also, I've had that experience when living in South Korea and while associating with Mexican nationals at church. A long time ago I learned that humility often is learned in humiliation.

Not The sound of Music, but the Cabaret (A song by a young German man called "tomorrow belongs to me." We took the tune and rewrote the words.

Um, I think the tune was invented for Sound of Music, so there may be copyright issues, but not sure it's really a German traditional song. Remember 'Edelweiss?'

The Earth Belongs To All
Tune: The Future Belongs To All **
The flowers is the meadow are greeting the sun, the trees in the forest stand talo.
But gather together to march as one: the earth belongs to all.
Chorus:
All of the goods of the earth and all decilsions of history, And all the inventions of humanness belong to all men [sic] through me.
The branch of the linden is leafy and green, the maples are golden in fall.
But somewhere a glory awaits unseen: the earth belongs to all.
The cries of the innocent sound in their pain, the tyrant has vanquished the small.
A powerful ruler lies bound in chains, till earth belongs to all.
A dream of the future is beckoning me. Like waltz music heard at a ball.
The morning will come when all men [sic] shall see: the earth belongs to all.
Oh, Father, Oh Father, Mysterious Power, your children are gathered to call:
Use us as thy servant to hasts the hour the earth belongs to all.
** CAVEAT: The tune was popular in Germany during the Nazi administration.
