Whether the real national Nazi anthem or not, it still gave me the shivers
whenever we sang the damn thing - conjured up to many horrible feelings and
memories, and I can't believe our European colleagues liked it much.
Perhaps I overreact.

In my crusty old age, I can't recall a connection with The Sound of Music.
But I know the tune appears in Cabaret, written by John Kander, with the
song titled "The Future Belongs to Me."
from the internet:
"The melody of the German patriotic song called Die Wacht am Rhein is
adapted by John Kander and Fred Ebb...in their musical play and movie
Cabaret as a fictional Nazi anthem, "Tomorrow Belongs to Me", meant to be
reminiscent both of Die Wacht am Rhein and the Horst Wessel Lied."
"The Horst Wessel Song was not, as previously stated, the German song sung,
famously, in the emotional scene Rick's Cafe Amercaine in Casablanca, only
to be drowned out by the Marseillaise!
<http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/MARSEILL.html> . As several
correspondents point out, that song was an older patriotic, but (non-Nazi
song called Wacht am Rhein (The Watch on the Rhine?"

Um, I think the tune was invented for Sound of Music, so there may be
copyright issues, but not sure it's really a German traditional song.
Remember 'Edelweiss?'

Tune: The Future Belongs To All **
The flowers is the meadow are greeting the sun, the trees in the forest
stand talo.
But gather together to march as one: the earth belongs to all.
Chorus:
All of the goods of the earth and all decilsions of history, And all the
inventions of humanness belong to all men [sic] through me.
The branch of the linden is leafy and green, the maples are golden in fall.
But somewhere a glory awaits unseen: the earth belongs to all.
The cries of the innocent sound in their pain, the tyrant has vanquished the
small.
A powerful ruler lies bound in chains, till earth belongs to all.
A dream of the future is beckoning me. Like waltz music heard at a ball.
The morning will come when all men [sic] shall see: the earth belongs to
all.
Oh, Father, Oh Father, Mysterious Power, your children are gathered to call:
Use us as thy servant to hasts the hour the earth belongs to all.
** CAVEAT: The tune was popular in Germany during the Nazi
administration.
