Dear Dhondiram and Shankar,
I remember the evening when the Wiegel boys were out late one evening
at the RLC. I can't remember whether they showed up for dinner or
not, but my intuition is that they were there, and then quickly
disappeared. We searched for them when it became dark and found them
in the chicken house. They decided our 25 chickens and 1 rooster
needed names so we could track their activities. They came up with
names for each, put the names on a chart and then banded each
chicken's leg with masking tape on which they wrote its name. The
rooster was named Brian and the mythology around him continues to
this day at Songaia. The ladies, or hens, had such names as Lucy,
Bertha, and other feminine names, without any attempt to copy the
names of those of us living at the RLC, which was smart. The most
interesting part of this exercise to me was that they remembered
these "ladies" by name. What kids!!!
What they didn't realize, or maybe they did, is that you don't name
farm animals that you intend to kill some day. When it came time for
the chickens to be slaughtered, there was no interest in doing the
deed, so our neighbor said she would take them, and so she did.
Fred
I have many memories of you as you were growing up. The first took
place at Kemper building. I suppose you were returning to Chicago
after being in Kenya, but I am not sure. What I remember was that I
was standing in the Guild Hall in the back of the ground floor. I
truly felt/heard a rumble and racket out in the front hall. And can
you guess what was happening? It was the Wiegle twins arriving in
the front door. Their energy and exuberance was an awesome sight and
experience! Little did I know that I would have the amazing
privilege of living with those same twins for 2 years at the RLC
(Residential Learning Center - the new student house) in Bother, WA
many years later!
Another: Both of the boys, but particularly Dhondi would become
nasally congested when he drank milk and he drank milk regularly.
We had him come to the Acupuncture clinic to have some treatments for
the congestion. One day, I spotted him coming our of the treatment
room holding a bunch of toilet paper to his nose and exclaiming
loudly - "they gave me a needle in my head and now my nose will not
stop running". It did temporarily help the congestion!
Yet another: I remember the night of Shakar's first concert at
school when he was playing the cello. He came upstairs dressed to the
"9s" in a royal blue jacket and black slacks! His hair was slicked
back and he really looked like a star!
There are many more encounters and tales to be told, but for now this
is the end. Have a great 30th celebration. You guys are dearly loved,
Nancy
