What a delightful, exuberant and profound story, Rob. I, too, and am sure
others do, have some powerful memories from that journey we took together.
Talk about selective memories. I remember the goat sacrifice as taking place
in Katmandu. Maybe it was an Indian shrine there. Maybe there was more than
one ritual like it on the trip. Whenever I'm in a small commuter plane, I
think of the time when we left Katmandu. I think we all were pulling back on
the stick along with the pilots to get us up and over the mountain. We were
delayed a day because of fog or something, and the pilots couldn't see
enough to be sure they could do it.  Wouldn't it be fun to have an Odyssey
'70 reunion and hear all to stories.  Maybe we can do it in cyber-space.

 

And I do remember The Weekly Reader! What an eye-opener. And all the
missionary stories I was fed in Sunday School did the same. I knew I wanted
to travel the world - but not as a missionary or deaconess, for goodness
sakes.  I thought they never danced or had fun and were stuck in the jungle
in Africa. Well I got my wish - and for goodness's sake. One of the
interesting side stories of being in Houston for my brother last days &
funeral was when his friends asked if I was retired from my missionary work!
That was how he thought of it and talked about it.

This month a new Chicken Soup for the Soul book was published - Life Lessons
for Loving the Way You Live by Jennifer Read Hawthorne. One of the stories
in the book is my personal story about my life in the ICA and the Order
Ecumenical. I thought that some of my colleagues might enjoy reading it and
knowing that it is out in the mainstream. A copy of my story is attached in
case you would like to put it on the website. The book as a whole is truly
amazing and inspiring.
