Jim,
I grew up in north central Massachusetts. In the mid-40s, from the
time I was ten, I worked in Ray's Pharmacy, my dad's (Fred Tessier) drug store,
one of four in our small mill town of 12,000--and home of Starrett Tools.
Today, Liggett's across the street, Clark's down the street, and Gould's in the
uptown section of Athol wouldn't see the light of day. Nor would Athol
Clothing that our neighbor Jett Stowell owned, nor the wonderful Little Candy Shop
that our immmigrant Greek neighbors owned, making candy in their basement that
rivaled what I saw in later years at Macy's.
What Avondale is doing with not only a mega Walmart but multiple Walmarts
is sick. How have we come to this? I continue to bemoan that fact that
many of us were brought up in schools where we were taught to sit down, shut up,
and listen to the teacher; never to think for ourselves. Many of our
backwoods small towns and cities are reaping the results today and have been for
many years.
Nevertheless, despite the travesty of No Child Left Behind, there are
more and more teachers today who are teaching their students to think ourside the
dots, outside the box. Too bad no one in Avondale listened to those who
spoke up. You are not the richer.
