Marshall,
The NYT is right. I was just in the Jiangsu Plains (between Shanghai,
Nanjing and Nantong) the other week the skeletal structure of the over building
that happened in anticipation of China's industrial boom is not happening. To
start with, China's market has dried up; also, China's cheap labor is walking
out of the factory floors until wages and benefits are more humanized. In
Sheyang, right in the old downtown where a laughing buddha the size of a two
storey room sits amidst the promise of commercial prosperity are the offices of
Mary Kay and Amway, which along with WalMart, have fueled the rising temperature
of consumer expectations. China has become its own domestic market and with
its currency gains abroad, it will now have to feed its own hungry domestic
market. The days of cheap goods from the Middle Kingdom is indeed, coming to
an end!
Jaime
Might go back soon though. Forgot to pick my three-piece Seville Row suits
for less than $50!!!
