The Earth"

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin states: "The task before us now, if we would not
perish, is to shake off our ancient prejudices, and to build the earth." In
his book, Building the Earth,12" he speaks of the "Sense of Earth,"

"The phrase "Sense of Earth" should be understood to mean the passionate
concern for our common destiny which draws the thinking part of life ever
further onward. In principle, there is no feeling which awakens so
belatedly, since it can become explicit only when our consciousness has
expanded beyond the broadening, but still too far restricted , circles of
family, country, and race, and has finally discovered that the only truly
natural and real human unity is the Spirit of Earth.

He also speaks of love. Chardin states: "Love is the most universal,
formidable, and mysterious of cosmic energies. From the point of view of
spiritual Evolution, it seems that we might be able to give a name and a
value to this strange energy of love. Could it not be, in essence, the
attraction which is excercised upon each conscious element by the center of
the universe? The call toward the great union, whose attainment is the only
real business in nature ...?

"It is not our heads or our bodies which we must bring together, but our
hearts."

Note: This line comes immediately before the part of the quote we
use..."The age of nations is past. The task before us...."

specific quote is from

Teilhard de Chardin, Building of the Earth, pp. 13; 16; 30.

Priest and Paleontologist

this review describes the book: (by Michael Joseph Lynch, Wellington NZ)

This set of five essays expresses Chardin's political, moral and religious
ideas about the future of human kind. Although first published in France in
1958, Chardin's philosophical thoughts remain relevant in today's day and
age. The essays are an inspirational read and provide the key to the
solutions of many of our current world's problems. These writings are not
just directed towards Christian thinkers, rather to all those who have a
passion for the future, a passion for the universal and a passion for the
individual. This 'passionate' concern for the Earth is the main thrust in
the modern striving for ecological awareness. Chardin developed his
'passion' for the Earth into a spiritual Evolution -'The Spirit of the
Earth', as he called it. For those who wish to go beyond the religion of
individualism and expand and tranform their energy into a cosmic awareness,
Chardin's essay on 'Human Energy', offers some fantastic insights. Great
food for thought and meditation, to build up one's spirit.
