This tooth discussion is so interesting, and I'm so glad that Sara's poem
and Burna's e-mail made it to my in box.
I lost a molar this year. It was one that I had fixed with a root canal in
Chicago (at the dental clinic associated with the University medical school)
in 1971 or 72, when we were in Fifth City. But the root cracked lengthwise
and I was in pain for several weeks before going to the dentist, who couldn't
believe how little infection there was. (Massage/acupressure had helped, I'm
sure.) Now I'll have to decide whether to invest in an implant.
Driving to the dentist alone, and then getting in my car after the
extraction brought me to one of those moments that highlighted a theme of the year for
me: loss and aloneness.
Another such moment was finding beautiful ripe white peaches at the fruit
stand in June, picking one up to take in the aroma, and realizing I couldn't
share the sweetness of his favorite fruit with Fred.
Perhaps the most poignant one was watching Obama's speech in Grant Park,
alone in our living room, and knowing how deeply Fred would have shared the
ecstasy: mine and all those in Chicago that night.
These were tearful, painful moments. But also very precious, as they made
me aware, each time unexpectedly, of the rich blessing of our marriage that I
mostly took for granted all those 52 years.
I love that I have a community with this level of understanding and
intimacy, with whom to share these thoughts.
Love and blessings for the New Year,
Jann
