Weigle: You want a story? We'll here is a short one.
The Salmon Family still use their Family Symbol (the sign of a fish around the wedge blade symbol,), our song is "All the earth belongs to all. . .", the Family Ritual is, "What is your name? We are the Salmons. Who are you? We are the Pioneers. Where are you going? To all the earth. For what purpose? To rebuild the world.
Our Family Story is, "The William E. and Beverly G. Salmon Family created as an unrepeatable event on June 3, 1956, merging the traditions of Salmon and Trapp, brought forth children by choice and gift. It declares the following:
We covenant to be those People of God who have decided to pioneer in the development of what it means to be a family in the 21st Century. Because of the collapse of the social structures, the necessary deed is to witness that all that has been, is and will be is good. Our lives are given to work for humanizing structures on behalf of all mankind."
When the children were young this symbol was drawn so they could color and paint it. We all made beaded and silver jewelery out of it, and my cross survives for worship use even now.
In many ways, I think it was the weekly use on Family Night, and the nightly bedtime ritual that helped to keep the vision before us all. The result is the children survived and each have positive memories that linger on today.

Dear Ones,
I do not know the origin of Song, Story and Symbol but it has certainly played out as a necessity for building, revitalizing, or sustaining a community of any form whether a residential community, a small town or neighborhood, or a movement!

Where did Song, Story, Symbol come from in our history?
I was having a conversation and that came up. I know it was woven into town meetings, but I believe it was already a part of the institute culture.
Any stories??
