Jim,
It may have been used in several courses, but it appears to me it was perhaps derived from the three poles under Cultural Commonality on the Social Process triangle: Communal Wisdom (story? ), Communal Styles (?) and Communal Symbols.
I have attached a methods chart I got from Lee Early. I'm not sure where he got it or how he used it, but you'll see story and symbol referenced on this chart.
