Dear Shelley,

You, Shelley, and the other US Citizens whom I have personally
encountered in my life have every reason, at this moment, to be proud to
be American, simply because of what YOU, and your colleagues "in the
faith" are, and have done.

My own life I would not have had in any other way: I was irredeemably
changed for the better by my decision to tangle directly with the US. I
came to theological and personal maturity in the United States, and it
would not have been possible for this to have happened in, say, the UK.

Yes, as they say, "Houston, we have a problem" - at the moment. But I
share your feeling, Shelley, about the fairly near future. I had an
incredible feeling of unconfined hope as Australian PM Kevin Rudd did his
stuff even as the tears streamed down my face.

What if one of the Democratic candidates actually made it to the White
House (my own preference would be Barack Obama)? What if we had a change
of PM in the UK before too long (entirely possible), and someone like
David Milliband or (Mr.) Hilary Benn (UK politicians of hope) came to
power? What if, what if...

There's hope out there.

I like to think that in twelve months time we will look back and see this
moment as the signal of the beginning of the end of a horrible eight-year
nightmare.

And given the resilience and character of the people of the United States
as a whole, I think healing will have begun to take place.

Where did I learn about hope? In the United States.

Love to all,

Adam in Dover, UK

It sounds as though this is a great era in Australia. I hope the day
will come again when I can say I'm proud to be an American. It's been
too long.
