Dear folks,
Have been here in Tokyo with Shizuyo and Wayne with their team at ICA for a month supporting the ICA conference to be held here in Japan. I guess you have to be able to read Japanese on the websites, because all of these pictures are available at the shrines and museums. Sorry I don:t have more data, but if you come to the conference on November 17 - 21, 2008, you can easily get a set. Sorry I am leaving tomorrow morning early for Taiwan, but the land of mystery, the river of consciousness, the mountain of care and the sea of tranquility are authentically here in Japan. What an amazing country! I envy all those who have lived here in the past.
Respectfully,

Dear Beret and Colleagues,
We have a framed set hanging over our dining table and they are all from the same artist - The description of these prints which were bought for us at our request by Joan Knutsen around 1986/7 when she lived in Japan.
The description about the Land of Mystery print reads:
Woodblock Print U43 one of 36 views of Mt Fuji "Sunshu Ejiri" by Hokusai Katsushika (1760 - 1849)
'Pieces of paper being blown around by a sudden gust of wind, men fighting against the wind, a sedge-hat being blown away, and men holding their sedge hats tightly against the wind....these movements are vividly respresented in a moment. The picture of a woman quite at a los what to do in another peculiarly Hokusai'
UCHIDA ART CO LTD Kyoto Handicraft Centre Kumanojinja-Higashi, Sakyo - Ku, Kyoto 606 Japan
Phone (075) 761 0345.
As these were purchased around 1987 this phone number may not be current!
Isn't the story interesting. I don't remember reading it in detail before!!
Wasn't it great that this piece was glued to the mount when they were framed!!
I cannot remember why there is no descriptive piece relating to the River of Consciousness
attached the the copy we had framed.
Here are the other two descriptions FYI:
The Mountain of Care reads: Woodblock Print (R-114/U-49)
"Sanka Hakuu" thunderstorm below the Mt Fuji, one of the 36 views of Mt Fuji by HK
'The glorious mountain above the dark clouds, the lightening and thiunder. The unshaken mountain standing in all its tranquility, the nobly depicted lightening, and the contrast the upper and lower half, make the moountian all but heroic in size.
The Sea of Tranquility: reads: Woodblock print: (R-59/U-46)
The waves off the coast of Kanagawa appearing like surging billows on the ocean more in a frenzy manner just like Hokusai's passionate character. The scene full of violent motions, the contrast between the deep blue and white, the novelty of the idea - this picture is considered the masterpiece of Hokusai. In this his skilful art is perfectly expressed.'
Peace and Kind regards
from us Down Under and in the Blue Mountains where we now live.

Beret,
I have a set hanging on a bathroom wall. I just checked and there is writing in Japanese on each which looks different...but I don't know if that is a name or a title. No help from here...sorry.

I have a friend who is interested in getting copies of the Land,
River, Mountain, Sea Japanese prints. Can easily find the Mountain
and the Sea by Houksai. Haven't located the Land and River in the
Internet. I can't recall if the Land and River were done by Houksai.
I have a vague recollection that one of them was done by Hiroshige.
Mine are buried somewhere in files in storage. Help please.
