[Oe List ...] Dick's completed life

Dear Amelia,

This is surely a "voice from the past" for you -- but how vividly I see
the whole Kroeger clan -- you and Dick, Garnett, John and Brooke -- as
members of my meditative council.

I'm sure it was when I came to teach an RSI course in Binghamton that I
must have first met you and Dick.  I will always see you as the
encouraging gracious presence, welcoming me (the
"not-too-confident-in-herself-pedagogue")  and Dick as a towering rock of
commitment to the Movement.  I fervently wished I had a mother like
Garnett -- engaged in and so supportive of her progeny's work.  (In 1968
when Joe and I joined the staff in Chicago my parents actually had the
FBI investigate the Ecumenical Institute, so sure they were that it was a
Communist organization.)

Over these recent years of our OE diaspora I have loved Dick's virtual
"care for our troops" -- with copies to us all of the Spong newsletters;
with his enthusiastic updates of where he was seeing the cutting edge of
the spirit in our times; with his amazingly swift references to
accessible copies of almost any common memory article any of us might
desire.

These days each colleague life that is "completed" brings me a deep
sadness and sense of loss; and then, only after a while of reflection and
tears, can I rejoice that we, as a community, really do continue to hold
in our hearts and consciousness and being so much of the giftedness of
that one very special life, and rely on it as a profound spirit resource.

Joe joins me in extending our love and condolences to you and your
family.
