Hi folks--just some clarification and additional info re the song Rainbow Trail:

Re the words:? Only most of the words?were original.? The first two lines: "We are the music makers,?and we are the dreamers of dreams" came from?an ode by Arthur O'Shaughnessy [see below] quoted?by Willy Wonka in the first?movie version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.? When?Willy?was showing the kids around the factory they came to?room where the wallpaper had pictures of?a variety?berries which were flavored as well.??One of the kids?pointed to a strange berry inquiring as to what kind it was.? Willy replied,?This is?a snozzberry!??The kid snidely persisted to question,?"Whoever heard of a snozzberry?"? Willy's reply to such a lack of imagination was:??"We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams."

Rainbow Trail?was written during the time of the Local Church/Parish Experiment.? Dewey Avenue Presbyterian Church, one of the LCX churches?was?where we worked as pastors with Charles Taylor (and neighboring church pastors Bob Booher, Bill Schlesinger, Charles Perrine; and the nearby Religious House).? Dewey Avenue was located in the NW quadrant of Rochester, NY in the neighborhood of Maplewood which bordered the Genessee River along which?ran an old Indian trail.? The song was written for one of our community assemblies and festival and later introduced to ICA during the summer of 1975.

Re the tune:??The tune is not original but is an adaptation of a?Native American tune.

-Another song?that comes to mind when I think of Dick Kroeger is?Victory's Cry?which?became Cannonball's HDP song.?

Re the words: The words are original, inspired by Joe Matthew's talk which included the story of "Three Old Men"--falling?into the depths of three separate wells of consciousness but arriving at?a common underground river Source of Consciousness and Being; and the old hymn "God?Is Working?His Purpose Out...and the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea".? The original title was "Three Old Men"?.? Dick was one who helped us plunge to the depths of theology and issues and was persistant in his vision of "moving and filling?the earth and sea" with new consciousness and care.

Re the tune:?The tune is an adapted?Native American Melodie "Laquiparle"?used for the?Dakota Hymn, found in several?mainline hymnbooks [PC(USA), p 271;?The Methodist Hymnal, p 40; GIA Gather Comprehensive, p 498];?and also the?Dakota hymnbook: Dakota Odowan, Dakota Hymns, p.98.?

???? We are the music-makers,
???? And we are the dreamers of dreams,
???? Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
???? And sitting by desolate streams;
???? World-losers and world-forsakers,
???? On whom the pale moon gleams:
???? Yet we are the movers and shakers
???? Of the world for ever, it seems.

???? With wonderful deathless ditties
???? We build up the world's great cities,
???? And out of a fabulous story
???? We fashion an empire's glory:
???? One man with a dream, at pleasure,
???? Shall go forth and conquer a crown;
???? And three with a new song's measure
???? Can trample an empire down.

???? We, in the ages lying
???? In the buried past of the earth,
???? Built Nineveh with our sighing,
???? And Babel itself with our mirth;
???? And o'erthrew them with prophesying
???? To the old of the new world's worth;
???? For each age is a dream that is dying,
???? Or one that is coming to birth.

Ode - Arthur O'Shaughnessy

so let us make our music and dream our dreams, for without imagination the sun would not rise nor the stars twinkle. and without creation and destruction there would be no ripples in a pond. there is meaning in every leaf, so come look for it with me.

Remembering Dick Kroeger

?

Much in the song Rainbow Trail speaks about his life.? The words and music were written by Ellie Stock, a Local Church Experiment? (and O:E) colleague of Dick and Amelia in Rochester, NY.

?

Dick?was certainly a Music Maker with that fine bass voice.? As a Rainbow Maker he did indeed unveil life's mystery many times.? How aware he was of the power of Symbols - and the passion he felt for the?Network of Spiritual Progressives?speaks to his commitment to be a pioneering Map Maker.? A Caretaker of Humanness - oh yes he was - in the Cannonball Human Development Project and wherever he was.??And humor and Dance that can beckon into new life - he was up for this.? I thank God for Dick's vigorous, profound, delightful colleagueship.
