Thanks, Bill, for that totally unanticipated perspective and cogent
reflection.
That's the perspective that helped me live in a religious congregation
for 24 years with a serenity that eventually surprised me. But I didn't
start there; it grew out of a decision to face how narrow-minded I was when I
was a Novice and young nun. I still remember the shock I experienced when
I realized that few of my sisters shared my perspective on religious life.
Very soon I decided that I could judge them or love them, and it totally
opened me up and changed my life. A classmate who entered the convent with me
also married a former priest. When Richard and I visited them years later
in Maine, Henry mentioned that a large percentage of nuns were former
victims of incest. That did not surprise me, but it made me grateful for that
earlier shift away from being judgemental. What really changed my life,
however was a broad range of reading and amazingly unanticipated events, not
the least of which was RS-I with Justin Morrill at the Fransiscan Monastery in
Rye, NH in 1968 (guess who identified with Miss Miller). That led to the
Academy in Fifth City the summer of 1969 and two sojourns at Kemper in the
mid-70s--the first a year, the second a year and a half--that my Provincial
amazingly allowed. And one of the great gifts of Kemper was my friendship
with Harold Williams.
Your perspective is what has helped Richard and me stay close to our
adopted twin sons, now 30, these past 24 years, and kept them close to us
through struggles with special ed, D & A, increasingly challenging jobs, and the
very rocky journey each of them has traveled in their relationships while
raising two children which are, of course, the four most wonderful
grandchildren in the world.
I googled Project Vida and found two websites with a bit of info about
your El Paso health centers. Is there another site with more? I am going
to have spinal surgery on May 11th. I was in the hospital two weeks over
Christmas with spinal stenosis. I have an excellent neurosurgeon, and I
don't want to live on pain killers. Everyone I've talked to who had the
surgery said it made a world of difference.
Again, it was good to hear from you, Bill. Please visit my website
