I have been catching up on the emails on healthcare reform. Bravo to those
of you who are working on this.
We've got to do something. As Obama points out the worst thing we can do is
do nothing. Despite all the rhetoric no one wants healthcare costs to
continue to rise at the rate they have risen, have the outcomes we do, and
see people without health coverage or are underinsured at the rate we do. We
all pay the cost of such a system of healthcare.
The President chose to work within the healthcare system we have. He did not
seek truly fundamental healthcare reform. While his choice is unsatisfying
to some, I believe it was a wise political choice. Further, he offered only
guidelines to reform in order to avoid the charge that this was being
directed by the White House. Of course, this charge is being made, but it is
not warranted.
What we must hope for is the best healthcare reform we can get now. Once a
decision is made that we are going to work on this as a nation, additional
changes can and will be made over time.
I was at a healthcare forum today. My Congressman, David Price, said that in
addition to write letters, those who care about this must attend the various
forums and speak up. I would think that vigils, public demonstrations and
letters to editors (as well as to Congressmen) would help.
The worst thing we can do is to do nothing.
Herman
