My late father-in-law was fond of the quote, "I complained because I had no
shoes until I met a man who had no feet." A wider view of the world does
put our perplexities in perspective just as taking off in an airplane
spreads out the masses of folk whose lives surround us usually unseen.
I was reacting to the sense of 'blessings' as the parts of life we like, in
contrast to the beatitudes in the texts of the gospels. Our - or maybe my -
iconic hero wasn't the one who ended up with the most toys, much as I would
like to have better cash flow. And belovedness isn't linked to health,
wealth, or the other 'blessings' for which so many folk give thanks around
harvest festivals. For me thankfulness is a posture much as trust or faith
- even though I'm really glad when I've run a yellow/red light not to see
flashing blue and red lights in the rear view mirror. It's a hard sorting
out in my own head - the relief at the bullet missing me vs. the gratitude
for being.

Hi I am so sorry for I truly didn't mean gratefulness in that I'm grateful
that I have it so much better than so many others in this world- these
slides bring up deep, deep sadness- and yes compassion. (I joined the Order
because I saw so much sorrow, inequity, innocent suffering in the world and
I wanted to help in some kind of meaningful way. I didn't know at the time
that I would receive so much in return!)
What I meant to say that I tend to complain and over focus on my own life
far too much and many times do not show/feel enough gratitude to the people
in my life or for so many small things that I take for granted- clean water
(access to water!), a home, a family, food & all the people's labor that
goes into what I eat everyday etc... And sorrow that so many are destitute,
hungry, hit by natural disaster, just trying to barely survive- and are/will
be the first to experience the profound effects and all the innumerable
consequences of global warming- drought, starvation, disease, uprootedness,
warfare...
I am grateful for colleagues in my life.

There's survivor's guilt as well as gratitude. The sadness of starvation
and neglect doesn't fill me with gratitude either. 'There is something in
the misfortune of our closest friends that does not displease us' - or makes
us thankful - seems more related to what Tillich called sin as separation.
